Writing For Engineering: An Authentic Learning Experience

This semester has been full of learning, especially in Writing for engineer’s class. Throughout the semester we have worked in several papers, from which I learned many new things and others not so new that I have been able to put in practice. Since this is an English course, at first, I thought that I was just going to read a lot and write boring essays. Now that the class is over, I have realized that this course was about real learning. From doing real life research for a proposal project to visit a museum, I have done many interesting things that I enjoyed. I have acquired valuable knowledge with each one of those experiences.

Resume and cover letter

In this paper I learned how to make an adequate resume and cover letter according to the work I am looking for. What I liked the most about this work was the teacher’s feedback. He indicated that I should have included some key words, which are listed in the job description of the internship that I was applying.

Interview Report

This was something very challenging, and new to me. I thought I would not find someone to interview, until I speak to a friend about the project and he told me he knew someone. At first, the thought of taking someone’s time made me shy and a little nervous.  But then, the amiability and enthusiasm of the interviewee made me feel more confident.  This end it up being a very pleasant process to me from which I take many useful advises, making this my favorite assignment.

Lab Report

This assignment to me was easier than the rest.  Due to the fact that I have previously taken several science’s courses, like physics and chemistry. Dealing with these classes I learned how to work with lab reports. The lab was based on a very simple experiment and I only had to use the techniques already learned to perform it.

Proposal project

This was the most difficult to me. Not only because we had to do a lot of real life research, but because we had some problems working as a group. Even though my experience with the project was not the best, I could learn something from that experience. In the future I will more careful when choosing people to work with in a group. It is important when choosing the members of your group to find people with a sense of responsibility. On the other hand, I’m glad that the members of my group were from different cultural backgrounds, because that helped us to see things from a broader perspective.

Technical Description

My technical description was about Foundation Systems. This was my second favorite assignment, because it allowed me to deeply investigate something related to my major. Being able to see my classmates take education into their own hands with the presentation was what I liked the most. Their presentations encouraged me to feel interested in other fields, and to continue to expand my knowledge. I hope to have contributed with a technical knowledge of something that perhaps my fellow students did not know.

Before the technical descriptions, we took a quest. I believe that its purpose was to review all the things learned and put them into practice. Things the professor don’t want you to forget, such as, punctuation, correct quotation punctuation, and the importance of a two-part title.
